BLACKROD Community Group is inviting the public to share in its commemorations for the centenary of the end of the First World war.

A series of events are planned to express gratitude to that generation who served, sacrificed, rebuilt and changed the nation.

Dances, a film show, a concert, a campfire and, of course a service of Remembrance, have all been arranged.

Group chairman Beryl Monaghan said: “We have been working to put together a range of events in Blackrod as we wanted to ensure as many people as possible are involved in commemorative events between Saturday, November 3, to Sunday, November 11.

“The programme that we have reflects the wide range of community groups in Blackrod and we feel that we are offering something for everyone during our commemorative week.”

She said the aim is to commemorate the 100-year milestone while reflecting on the horrors of the war, its causes and the importance of

learning lessons of the past to help build peace in the future.

Blackrod Sports and Community Centre has bought ten soldier silhouettes from the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities Programme. These will be distributed around Blackrod for all to see.

In addition, local people and businesses are being encouraged to sponsor a lamp post poppy which will go on display at sites around the town.
