BOLTON ICD Support Group has donated its last four defibrillators, completing its six-year Defibs4Bolton campaign.

The campaign, that was launched in 2012, has donated 160 lifesaving defibrillators to the local community.

The final four defibrillators were donated to Barrow Bridge Mission, The Parallel young people's centre, Queens Park junior park run, and Lostock Rugby Club.

The campaign was set up by Bolton ICD support group which has been running since 2006.

It was inspired by former Bolton Wanderers’ footballer Fabrice Muamba who received lifesaving treatment when his heart stopped during a match.

The first defibrillator was donated to Bolton Rugby Club and the campaign has since donated to schools, churches, and community centres.

Bolton ICD chairman Tracey Garde, said that one of the defibrillators was used last year at Nuffield Bowling Club. The defibrillator was used during a bowling match and the individual was successfully resuscitated.

Tracey spoke about how cardiac arrest is a big problem in the UK. Figures suggest between 12 to 15 young people suffer cardiac arrest every week.

She said: “Not every building has a defibrillator, but every building has a fire extinguisher, and more people die from cardiac arrest than a fire.”

Defibs4Bolton received the defibrillators through a combination of fundraising and donations.

Tracey said: “We were only going to start off doing a handful so it’s an amazing achievement.”
