TWO teachers from a Bolton primary school who starred in a documentary are to attend the Scottish Baftas this weekend following the show’s award nomination.

Blackrod Primary School headteacher Ian Dryburgh and assistant head, Katherine Mead, were invited along to the glitzy ceremony after the show, Class of Mum and Dad, was given a nod in the category for Best Features and Factual Series.

The pair will attend alongside members of the production company at the star-studded event in Glasgow on Sunday evening.

The four-part fly-on-the-wall documentary which aired earlier this year featured 17 parents and one grandparent going back to school to study the Year Six curriculum alongside their own children.

The show saw parents replicate their kids daily school routine, including school dinners, SAT tests, classroom rules and homework.

Mr Dryburgh described the event as “prestigious” and the red-carpet event would be a “one off experience” for himself.

He said: “I’ve been at the school for 30 years and it is the ultimate accolade. It’s gone beyond the education world and into the wide world.

“It’s very exciting for the school. It’s quite rare for a primary school to get nominated for something like this and we’re delighted.

“When we decided to go ahead with it, we didn’t realise the impact and success it would have. It’s surpassed our wildest dreams.”

Mr Dryburgh also praised assistant head Mrs Mead, who he calls a “total superstar”.

He said: “We’ve had recognition from across world and she’s been named by thousands as being a superstar of education.”

Mrs Mead said at the time of the documentary that “taking part in the experience was amazing, challenging and entertaining".

She added: “Watching the class bond and morph into a ‘real class’ was brilliant.

“It was the most unusual teaching experience but one that I’m glad I was part of.”

Mr Dryburgh and Mrs Mead will take part in a champagne reception and an after-drinks party while in Glasgow, as well as having the opportunity to rub elbows with film and TV stars.

The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook from 7pm on Sunday, with red carpet coverage starting from 5pm.
