POPPY Day organisers are hoping that the lack of a band won’t put off villagers on November 11.

Blackrod Town Council has issued a statement to encourage residents to turn out for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War commemorations.

A spokesman said: “This year Blackrod has been unable to count on the services of a band for the service.

“However, it is hoped that local residents will ensure that the lack of a band will not deter those who wish to ensure that Blackrod’s Service of Remembrance is still held with the dignity and fortitude given to us all by those who served long ago.”

The Blackrod Service of Remembrance and Maroons will begin at the war memorial in the cemetery grounds at 10.30am and include a collective Blackrod schools choir as well as the normal service of Remembrance.

The Remembrance Day Parade will leave the war memorial at 11.05am and march through the village to St Katharine’s Church.

The Remembrance Day Service is due to begin at approximately 11.45am.

Those who have attended the service and parade are invited by organisers for refreshments at the Hilltops Social Club in Hill Lane.

This year, Blackrod's schools, the town council and clergy of all faiths have come together to organise the Remembrance Day events.

The town clerk said: "This town has pulled together to put this marvellous day on."
