A SCHOOL in Great Lever marked the centenary of Armistice Day with a beautifully creative waterfall of poppies.

Pupils from the ESSA Academy in Lever Edge Lane recreated the famous Tower of London poppy display with 1,500 of their own hand-made poppies.

Writing online Miss Koller, head of humanities and languages, said: "We wanted our students at Essa Academy to do something special to mark the centenary of the Armistice agreement.

"Each student was given time to explore the importance of the First World War and we reflected on the great sacrifice of the men and women involved in securing a safe future for us all.

"We recreated the Tower of London poppy display in our heart space. The display included 1,500 poppies, each with handwritten messages from our students.

"Some of the poppies contained poems, some contained information about the sacrifice of the soldiers from the British Empire, and others were focussed on the injuries sustained by the brave men and women of the war."

The poppies cascade down from a second floor window in the centre of the academy, evoking the imagery of the 888,246 ceramic red poppies which made up the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red art installation at the Tower of London in 2014.

The emotive artwork has continued to inspire similar public memorials each Remembrance Day since.
