BOLTON’S best and brightest have been highlighted for their commitment to sport.

Winners in the Bolton Sports Awards were announced at an event at the University of Bolton Stadium in September and will go on to compete at the Greater Manchester level this week.

The awards aim to give credit to those individual or groups who have made an outstanding achievement to sports of activity across the borough.

Horwich Cycling Club’s Tim Worthington was named Sports Achiever of the Year after storming to victory at the national Closed-Road Circuit Championships last year.

He was joined by Paralympic wheelchair rugby star Ayaz Bhuta, who scooped the Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year Award, and Darren Crompton, a football volunteer for Bolton Lads and Girls Club, who gives three nights a week and weekends to coaching youngsters and was given Volunteer of the Year.

Breast cancer survivor and volunteer Sue Taylor won the Changing Lifestyle Award; community football champion Susan Bingham won the Unsung Hero Award and Eddy Kavanagh from Sharples and Castle Hill Wrestling clubs, who coached the England team at the Commonwealth Games, won Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, group awards were given to Birtenshaw School for School Commitment to PE and Sport; and Tri-Rivington UK which won the Club of the Year Award.

Winners have a chance to be named the best in Greater Manchester, and will be announced at Old Trafford cricket ground on Friday, but can be followed on Twitter using #GMSportsAwards.
