MOUNTAIN rescue services, paramedics and police were called to pull a man from a river in Astley Bridge.

Bystanders saw the man sat by the side of the Astley Brook, close to Astley Lane, after an injury to his leg appeared to leave him trapped.

Groups of emergency service personnel helped to remove the man from the site and he was taken away from the scene in an ambulance.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called shortly before noon today (Wednesday November 14) to a report of concern for the welfare of a man who had fallen into Astley Brook, Bolton.

"Emergency services attended and the man was recovered from the river. The man sustained a minor injury to his leg.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

One eyewitness said he had been walking in the area when he saw police officers stood near the man, they were quickly joined by mountain rescue personnel and paramedics who lifted the man from the water.
