A MASSIVE fire has devastated a warehouse in Little Hulton, which is understood to contain asbestos.

More than a hundred firefighters have been tackling the blaze, which broke out at a kitchen fittings warehouse on the Worsley Trading Estate at about 1.30am.

It was brought under control at 6.30am, however, firefighters remain at the scene dampening down the flames.

The factory, which is home to PJH Group, is understood to contain asbestos.

Members of the public are being urged to stay away from the area, keep their doors and windows shut and avoid touching anything they suspect may be asbestos.

Firefighters say that about 80 per cent of the former Lucozade factory has been damaged in the blaze.

The A6 has just been reopened at junction 4 of the M61. It had been closed between Armitage Avenue and the roundabout at Watergate Lane.

Wharton Primary School will be closed today as a result of the fire.

When firefighters arrived, the blaze measured 100m by 100m with the whole roof on fire.

At the height of the fire there were 10 fire crews and two aerial appliances tackling it and junction four of the M61 was closed to traffic.

After almost five hours of battling with the flames, the firefighters surrounded the blaze and brought it under control.

At 6.36am incident commander Tony Bryan said: "Our crews have worked tirelessly through the night to tackle this very challenging incident. Thanks to their hard work the fire is now surrounded and under control.

“There will be an emergency service presence at the scene for some time yet and there will be some disruption, I would like to thank residents for their cooperation. As a result of the fire, some asbestos has been blow on to surfaces in the local area. This is low level asbestos and is nothing to worry about but if you see any please do not touch it.

“We currently have the Forward Incident Officer from the Local Authority supporting us at the incident.

"We are currently arranging street cleansing, and notifying various premises such as schools which have been affected in the immediate vicinity.

“People should continue to keep all windows and doors closed and stay well clear of the area.

Eight fire engines and two aerial units are still at the scene.

North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Police are also at the scene, although no one is thought to have been injured.
