THE world had just been plunged into the Second World War, but this sleepy view of Firwood Fold, in November, 1939, suggests the news hadn't reached some parts of Bolton. The cobbled path by the side of Samuel Crompton's birthplace was little changed over the centuries – and indeed is not much different even today.
