MEMBERS of the public have been warned not to touch anything they suspect is asbestos.

The fire service, council and Public Health England began cleaning the area yesterday and have reassured the public the asbestos is considered "low level".

The kitchen warehouse which caught fire has an asbestos-cement roof which was completely destroyed in the fire.

The debris from the roof could be seen littering the area around the warehouse, coating people's cars and large chunks had made their way into some residents' gardens.

The fire damaged 90 per cent of the warehouse and Salford Council said the owners, PJH Group, are demolishing the remains of the building today and doors and windows should remain shut to prevent dust from spreading into homes.

Salford Council has put out advice for residents who may have asbestos debris on their property.

They say:

If you find small particles of ash or debris from the fire on your property or vehicles and they are small enough to wash away, you can first dampen them down using water, then gently flush them away to the drain.

If there are larger pieces contact us for specialist removal.

Do not sweep up or vacuum ash or debris as this could create airborne dust.

If you prefer to leave any cleaning to the specialist team then you can request this. Contact them by calling on 0161 793 2500.
