TV programme The One Show's annual The Rickshaw Challenge has passed through Lowton, Leigh and Astley this afternoon, Friday.

The team of six youngsters made it to Newton Road in Lowton at around 3.30pm with presenter Matt Baker on the last day of an eight-day 423-mile journey which began in Calais last Friday.

The team stopped at Leigh Community Fire Station for around 20 minutes where Matt Baker was greeted by firefighters and residents.

They set back off on St Helens Road at around 4pm and carried on into the town centre at King Street before turning right at Spinning Jenny Way and going along Chapel Street and Manchester Road.

The team then headed towards Astley on Manchester Road and Chaddock Lane.

The Rickshaw Challenge finishes in Salford, with all funds raised in aid of Children in Need.

This year's rickshaw has been built by McLaren and is more accessible to pedal.

Ahead of this year’s challenge, Matt Baker said: “This is the eighth year that we’ll be heading out on the roads with the Rickshaw Challenge and I can’t wait to get back in the saddle alongside six truly inspirational young people.

“Every year the support that we get never ceases to amaze me, it’s fantastic to see how people from all across the UK get behind the Challenge and I’m looking forward to seeing all those friendly faces willing us on again this year, and helping us to raise so much money for a charity which is incredibly close to my heart.”

Since 2011, The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge has raised more than £21m for BBC Children in Need.

Fellow The One Show presenter, Alex Jones, added: “The Rickshaw Challenge is a chance for our viewers to really see how funding from BBC Children in Need is making a difference to young people’s lives.

"It’s one of the highlights of our year at The One Show, and I can’t wait to cheer on the team as they conquer another epic journey across the country on the rickshaw.”
