THE council has warned that asbestos and ash have travelled from the warehouse fire in Little Hulton to other parts of Bolton.

Residents posting on social media have noticed ash on their cars as far away as Bromley Cross, around nine miles away.

Bolton Council has advised people not to touch any large clumps of debris, which appear white and instead to contact a specialist.

A statement from Bolton Council said: "You may have heard that there was a large fire in Little Hulton overnight. The fire has now been put out, but clumps of debris may have been carried into other areas.

"The advice from Public Health England is that while there is no direct evidence of long-term health risks from fires involving asbestos containing materials it is sensible that any debris is removed to minimise potential exposure."

The fire started yesterday at around 12.30am and the fire service worked through the night to get the fire under control.

Bolton Council has advised residents across Bolton who have spotted larger clumps to arrange a council clean up if necessary.

Yesterday Salford Council announced advised people not to sweep up or vacuum the ash and debris as it can cause airborne dust.

Salford Council advised that smaller pieces can be swilled away.

It said: "If you find small particles of ash or debris from the fire on your property or vehicles and they are small enough to wash away, you can first dampen them down using water, then gently flush them away to the drain."

Those living in Little Hulton near the fire can call 0161 793 2500 or those living in Bolton 01204 333333 for a specialist clean up of larger chunks.
