DANGEROUS drivers are putting children at risk by failing to stop at a zebra crossing outside a primary school.

Teachers at St John the Evangelist in Bromley Cross have warned parents that drivers have not been stopping at a crossing erected right outside the gates in Darwen Road.

On Facebook the school said: "Please take extra care on the zebra crossing outside school.

"We are aware that some drivers are failing to stop."

The school is teaching its pupils about road safety and has told parents high visibility jackets will be available to purchase shortly for the children to alert drivers to pedestrians waiting to cross.

The zebra crossing in Darwen Road is relatively new to the area and was requested by the school.

Residents of the area have also reported cars not stopping on social media sites.

Cllr David Greenhalgh, who represents Bromley Cross ward, said: "We were happy to facilitate the request from the school for a zebra crossing when funding became available.

"It is now vital that we ensure that motorists respect that crossing, and both the Council and the police have been made aware of recent issues.

"All new crossings do take some time to become embedded in the minds of motorists, but if the issues continue, then we will be asking both the Council and the police to look at further measures."

Drivers who fail to stop at the crossing appear to be unaware of its existence, despite the two metre tall poles with flashing, yellow beacons which warn of its presence.
