A GLASS bottle was thrown at the window of Blackrod Sports and Community Centre shattering glass over babies and their mothers during a massage class.

Seven babies were lying naked on the floor of the ‘Yoga Bunnies’ class being massaged by their mums yesterday.

The class was supposed to be a calming experience, but in seconds everything changed.

At approximately 10:10am, a wine bottle was thrown at the window of the small room, cracking the glass.

Helen Swan, the leader if the Yoga Bunnies class, described the scene: “There were shards of glass everywhere, centimetres away from two of the babies.”

She commented that the during the massage class the babies are in their nappies and could have easily been hurt.

Belongings, including baby blankets and car seats, were covered in glass. Ms Swan added it was thanks only to the blinds being shut to create a relaxing atmosphere that more glass did not fly across the room.

Lindsay, aged 28 from Bolton, was one of the first mothers to jump up after the window smashed. “It shocked us. We didn’t know if it was the heating or if it was a gunshot,” she said. “Glass was on the floor. We had to shake everything.”

Lindsay managed to catch a glimpse of a suspected culprit. She saw a middle aged man who “stared at the window” whilst “speeding” past the centre in a white car. The man was wearing a florescent orange work top.

Nigel Gidney, the centre’s caretaker, helped to move the mums and then reported the incident to the police.

He said: “The mothers were visibly shocked, they were upset and distressed. I’m surprised no one got cut, two of the mothers were right in the firing line.”

The caretaker also said Greater Manchester Police are not pursuing any investigation, as there are no witnesses with any identifying details.

Mr Gidney said “it’s a bizarre incident, nobody can shed any light on it at all. Hopefully someone will know something”

He feels that the attack may have been “deliberate” as they have never had any problems before. “He would have had to drive into the car park and negotiate quite a few cars.”

Ms Swan also noted that her car featured Yoga Bunnies stickers, saying people in the vicinity could “work out what class was going on.”

Mr Gidney said the incident has “sent a warning” to the centre, concluding “we need to install CCTV in case it happens again.”

Councillor Ann Cunliffe responded to the incident saying, “how any individual could attack a community centre with babies inside is beyond me. I hope for the safety of the community the culprit is discovered and appropriate action taken by the police. This is a disgusting, unwarranted act.”
