A FIREFIGHTER has come to the rescue to ensure children in Bolton don't miss out on the traditional countdown to Christmas.

Colin Faulds collected 600 advent calenders thanks to the generosity of the people of the borough.

This is the second time the firefighter, based at Bolton Central Fire Station, has staged the appeal.

The calendars were donated to Urban Outreach to be distributed to those families in need or rely on foodbanks.

Colin, who lives in Heaton, said: "Even though this is the second year I have done it, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of people.

"I think it is great that people think of others at this time year

"I put an appeal on social media and through The Bolton News and people donated them.

"I have been collecting them from fire stations, businesses and schools."

Colin started the appeal last year after realising some children would miss out on the season calenders because of cost. He recalled how much he looked forward to opening the doors every day in December.

He added: "I think advent calendars are brilliant, for me as a child it was the start of Christmas. The tree and decorations are up and it is the countdown to Christmas."

Now Colin is set to continue his festive mission every Christmas.

"I will continue to do it as long as their is a need for it," said Colin.
