A MARCH will take place through Bolton town centre next month as part of a campaign against domestic violence.

Organisations and volunteers in Bolton have signed up to the international campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence to raise awareness of the issue and call for change.

The campaign will culminate locally with a Reclaim the Streets march.

Bolton Council, Bolton at Home, the Endeavour Project and Fortalice are among the organisations taking part.

An estimated 1.2 million women aged 16 to 59 suffered domestic abuse last year according to the most recent crime survey for England and Wales.

National research highlights that two women per week are killed by their current or ex-partner.

Other awareness and support activities in Bolton will include screen printing community workshops, craft sessions, performances and screenings.

The yellow sofa, hosted by organisations across Bolton, will visit communities and hold discussions on the issues surrounding domestic violence.

Executive Cabinet Member for Community Issues, Cllr Anna-Marie Watters, said: "Domestic violence is a crime that affects all too many women in our society.

"By coming together with our partner organisations, we are hoping to raise awareness of the issues and let people know about the help that is available for those in need. The 16 days of action send a clear message that gender violence will not be tolerated."

Awareness and activities run until December 10.

Today from 10am to noon and 1pm-4pm in Unit 5, Crompton Place a workshop delivered by ‘Stand Up Sisters’, will talk about the places and situations where women feel vulnerable.

Tomorrow from 11am until noon, there will be a screening Nanette’ in Unit 5, Crompton Place. At 1pm to 3pm Endeavour Project will present two short videos showing “One Woman’s Journey Through Our Services”.

On Monday, December 3, from 10am to 2.30pm a screen printing workshop will take place in Unit 5 Crompton Place.

On Wednesday, December 5, from 1pm to 3pm, Endeavour, is hosting a craft afternoon in 26 Chorley New Road.

A day of stand-up comedy will take place at Crompton Place on Friday, December 7.

The 16 days will culminate in a Reclaim the Streets march on Saturday, December 8, at 2pm. Starting at Bolton Town Hall, people will be marching against gender violence.
