SANTA wowed the crowds at Farnworth Christmas Lights Switch-On this evening.

Families gathered on Market Street to see the man himself approach on a large float decked out like a sleigh.

He teamed up with the Farnworth Suffragette Inspirational Woman of the Year, Margaret Kay, to flip the switch and light up a huge Christmas tree.

Ms Kay said: "It's great, it gets better every year. The turnout this year has been really good, we were a bit worried about the weather this morning because it was pouring down for a while but God has shined his light on us and its not rained on everyone.

"I'd just like to say thank you to the Farnworth Parents Group and the other people who have acknowledged people like me and who are trying to make Farnworth a bit better."

Kearsley Youth Brass Band helped to kick-off the night, entertaining the crowds in the build-up to the big moment when Father Christmas.

After Santa had appeared and the lights were switched on he spent his time greeting children and giving out presents.

There were also stalls for a number of local groups that attended the event.

Groups involved in the switch-on included Angels Dance and Fitness, Newbury Youth Club, Farnworth Parents Group, Zac's Youth Bar and The Well Baptist Church.
