A PROPOSAL for Bolton to deliver its own housing plan to prevent overdevelopment has been delayed as other motions took precedence at Wednesday's meeting.

The motion, which was proposed by Conservative councillor Zoe-Kirk Robinson, may be discussed at the next full council meeting on January 23.

It calls for a five-year housing supply plan to be delivered amid delays to the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework which some say is helping developers build on green spaces.

Discussions about targeted area funding, road improvements and Brexit dominated the meeting meaning there was no time to discuss other motions such as this one.

MP Chris Green voiced his support for the motion saying: “Bolton Council now needs to take action to prevent more undirected housebuilding and lacking development of our local infrastructure."

Politicians have been quarrelling over housing plans as several major developments initially refused by the local authority were overturned by the government.

The Spatial Framework was supposed to supersede the previous housing plan which was last created in 2011.

The delayed plan is supposed to set out land allocation for housing and employment for the next 20 years.

Since then, several controversial developments on “protected open space” were successfully appealed with planning inspectors citing the lack of a five-year supply of housing land.

The Bolton West MP said: “We have been left in limbo long enough for the 10 Labour-led borough councils and the Mayor of Greater Manchester to deliver the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework.

“This was their opportunity to set out a vision for Greater Manchester, with plans for local house building and developing the vital infrastructure needed to go alongside it."
