RAIN couldn't dampen the festive spirit as residents flocked to the big Christmas light switch on in Horwich.

Children took part in a magical lantern parade, the first of its kind in Horwich.

Designed by pupils at St Catherine's CE School in Horwich, the parade made its way down Chorley New Road signalling the start of the annual big switch on.

A countdown from 10 to one was held before the Christmas tree lights were turned out bringing a festive sparkle to proceedings.

Father Christmas, who had earlier been visiting children at nearby St Catherine's CE Primary School also made an appearance.

Horwich RMI band performed on the evening, accompanying Horwich Community Choir.

Residents who braved the cold and rain sang traditional carols including Away in a Manger and O Come All Ye Faithful.

The annual event ended with popular Christmas music performed by the band, including Jingle Bells.

Cllr Wright said: "We have had a great turnout.

"The lantern parade, the first we have had at the Christmas light switch on, was a enormous success, much better than we expected.

"The band and the choir were fantastic. They always take part in community events."

He added: "It's officially Christmas in Horwich."

Among those taking part in the occasion was John Green, from Horwich Rotary Club, who was one of the helpers on Father Christmas' float.

He said: "It is always absolutely wonderful, so many volunteers help out."
