FESTIVITIES brought in over £5000, marking yet another success for an annual market in Bolton.

Despite the cold, Smithills residents came out in force on Saturday to show their support for the market raising money for Urban Outreach, a local Christian charity providing care for disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Bolton.

Months in the making, volunteers contributed their finest handmade crafts to more than 40 stalls lining the streets.

The unique Christmas gifts were accompanied by food and drink from around the world.

Roast chestnuts and mulled wine were among the traditional classics, while curries from South India, paella from Spain and treats from the Caribbean were sampled by those feeling more adventurous.

Organisers John and Adele Platt were aiming to build on the popularity of last year's market, which raised over £6500. They said: "More volunteers than ever before wanted to support this years’ Christmas market.

"Our volunteers are amazing and have pulled out all the stops to celebrate Christmas and bring our annual market to life.

"Thanks to them we have been able to help the wider community of Bolton by donating all the proceeds to Urban Outreach."

The annual market first appeared five years ago and has gone from strength to strength, adding carol singers, an art auction and a hamper competition to the entertainment.

The chief executive of Urban Outreach, Dave Bagley said: "It is because of the hard work and dedication of volunteers such as this, that Urban Outreach has become the organisation that it is today”.
