THE Lidl supermarket in Golborne will relocate to Bridge Street after permission has been granted by council planning officers.

The supermarket had first revealed in January that it wanted to move its current store on High Street as part of its ongoing expansion ambitions within the UK.

Construction is estimated to start on site in early 2019 with a view to opening the store in the autumn.

The multi-million investment will see Lidl build a sustainable store with 1,286m² sales area with plans to create up to 20 new jobs.

The supermarket will feature facilities including an in-store bakery, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, Nick Harvey, said: “We could not be more delighted to have received planning permission, and look forward to getting started on construction. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening the doors to our brand new store in the near future.”

There was a residents consultation held by supermarket bosses at Golborne Library in February to discuss the plans and ask for their suggestions.

And the Journal reported when plans were submitted to Wigan Council for permission to make the move in March.

The store will include an in-store bakery, longer tills with dual packing, customer toilets and parking for cars and bicycles.

Lidl UK says it has experienced continued growth over the years with more than two thirds of its products being  British sourced - ranging from quality fruit and vegetables, to premium wines from its Wine Tour collections.

The planned store in Golborne will add to Lidl’s existing store portfolio of 730, and will form part of the company’s growth plans which will see it open up to 50 new stores a year.
