TONY Hutchinson has it wrong (Letters, December 12).

The hard border has nothing to do with passport control.

Ireland has passport control ­— albeit not for people going to and from the UK ­— it is to do with goods going in and out of the country.

Switzerland doesn't have one, even though it's surrounded by EU countries, but Ireland has to have one, according to the EU.

Why?
