THE shocking racist attack on a mother and son in Breightmet prompted a lot of community response.

Their attacker, Dale Hart, aged 29, of Grantchester Way, Breightmet received a 12 month suspended jail sentence for affray and a racially aggravated common assault.

The news prompted City Sanctuary of Bolton to issue a public statement.

Chair Shaheda Mangerah said: "We were really saddened to learn about the attack on a mother and son who are living in Bolton after having fled persecution in their country of origin.

"Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community, regardless of where they have come from. Through our experience of supporting sanctuary-seekers in Bolton, we have witnessed numerous acts of kindness and generosity from local community members.

"This incident is in no way representative of the wider community in Bolton which has overwhelmingly welcomed these newcomers with openness and acceptance."
