MANCHESTER United have announced that Jose Mourinho will be leaving the club.

The 55-year-old has spent two-and-a-half years in charge but lacklustre performances over the course of the season and a recent 3-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool look to have sealed his fate.

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind Liverpool who are top and 18 behind Manchester City.

A spokesman for the club said they would be appointing a caretaker manager until the end of the season.

They said: "The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."
