A MAN remains in a critical condition in hospital after being found with stab wounds in Montserrat Road, Johnson Fold.

Residents say they saw the 49-year-old man, named locally as Paul Dixon, staggering down the street and collapsing while his partner screamed and shouted that he had been stabbed.

Police say they have arrested a 34-year-old woman on suspicion of assault and she remains in custody for questioning.

Officers were called to a property in the street at 12.50am.

This morning police erected two tents — one in a front garden and the other over a vehicle in the street a short distance away near the junction with Tattersall Avenue.

Demi Chadderton, aged 19, lives in a house across the street and told how she was woken at around 1am by a woman who was screaming from the house opposite.

She said: "Last night I was in bed and I heard screaming - it was loud.

"When I went to look it was this woman shouting, 'he's been stabbed'.

"She kept saying, 'someone help me, please help me'.

"We thought it was just a drunken thing but then we went outside."

Ms Chadderton and her mother Patricia Baines went out to see what had happened and they saw a man stagger down the street and fall behind a white van.

"He was so blue," she said. "He was lying there and not moving."

The Bolton News:

Both Ms Baines and Ms Chadderton, along with her father Gary Chadderton were there when police and ambulance services arrived.

Mr Chadderton said he was asked to hold a bag of liquid that was being pumped into the man, named locally as Paul Dixon, as paramedics treated him.

Other neighbours in Montserrat Road say they were woken by police officers knocking on doors at 2.30am this morning asking if they had heard or seen anything.
