WINDERMERE will once again host the Cumbria and Lake District backgammon championship this spring.

The challenge event will be held at the Cedar Manor Hotel on Sunday April 14 and is likely to attract some of the UK’s top players.

Last year Newcastle’s Graeme Turner took the honours, becoming the first two time champion after beating Martin Barkwill (also from Newcastle) 7-1 in the final. He was also the winner of the inaugural contest in 2014.

The championship, which has the backing of the UK Backgammon Federation and the British Isles Backgammon Association, was launched by Cedar Manor owner Jonathan Kaye who said: “We are now recognised as one of the major tournaments on the UK calendar.”

He plans a tournament for 16 players but says that in future years that number could be increased, with the event being staged over a whole weekend.

Also going up this year will be the cash prize fund of £250, divided between winner and runner up. There will also be a prize for the Consolation Final winner, and the champion will also win a two-night stay at Cedar Manor.

Registered players will have unlimited tea and coffee during the day and a hot two-course lunch.

“Non-players can attend and also have lunch/tea and coffee and there will be players who also want to attend but may not want to play in the tournament; they are most welcome too,” said Jonathan. “As players get knocked out I am sure they will be up for a few games.”

Registration is now open by calling the hotel on 015394 43192.
