Discount supermarket Lidl is giving away a few free essentials  for new parents.

The chain - which has several stores across the area - is giving away free baby boxes full of nappies, wipes, a muslin and more.

The boxes, which are popular in Finland, are made from a thick cardboard and come with a firm mattress, waterproof mattress cover and a cotton sheet.

The baby box comes with nappies, wipes and more.

Replacing the need for a traditional Moses basket or cot, the Baby Box is thought to prevent babies from rolling onto their tummies, which experts think can contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Lidl, which is also launching a big baby sale this Thursday, featuring everything from high chairs and cot beds to thermometers and night lights, has teamed up with The Baby Box Co to give away the boxes.

All parents have to do to get one is to complete a free 15-minute video course online.

You can then pick a location to collect your box, or pay a small fee to have it delivered.

Each box is gender neutral with an animal theme and with a black and white design on the inside to 'aid baby stimulation'.

The box contains:

- A mattress and waterproof cover

- One fitted sheet

- A 24 pack of Lupilu newborn nappies

- A 56 pack of Lupilu newborn wipes

- One muslin

A spokesperson for Lidl said: "We are proud to partner with The Baby Box Co, which offers free online parenting courses from healthcare experts and free rewards for completing them – like the high quality baby boxes which come with one pack of Lupilu newborn nappies and one pack of Lupilu newborn wipes to help new parents in those first days of parenthood."
