A POWERFUL pieces of artwork has been created to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

They have been created by a young group artists at Bolton School boys’ division as part of Holocaust Memorial Day which will be marked by schoolchildren, faith leaders and people in Bolton.

The artwork was produced by pupils in Years Eight to 13 working with Holocaust art educator Caroline Slifkin for a whole day, during which they produced work on this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme, torn from home.

During the session, which was funded by The Holocaust Educational Trust, pupils considered how they could use colour symbolically to portray the events of the Holocaust and its aftermath: the vibrancy of life beforehand, the colourless world of concentration camps and ghettos, and life afterwards for the survivors where colour might return but nothing could ever be the same. The pupils were inspired by the work of artists Samuel Bak and Ceija Stojka.

Caroline said: “Always a pleasure working with Mrs Turner and students at BoltonSchool. Excellent day of Holocaust art looking at the art of Holocaust survivors. Such impressive art created by students.”

The art work will go on display at Bolton’s Holocaust Memorial Day service on January 23 in Bolton Town Hall’s Festival Hall.

A service will be held at 1.15pm in the Festival Hall.

Presentations and reflections will be given by community and civic leaders and schools. There will be readings of poems and people will be sharing their own experiences on the day.
