A RARE opportunity to take in the panoramic views from the top of Bolton Parish Church can still be had today.
Tours are taking place throughout the afternoon up until 4pm.
The tower has been opened as part of the Thanksgiving weekend held at the church for Bolton’s millworkers.
The climb up the 189 spiral staircase is certainly worth the effort but wrap up warm because it’s absolutely freezing up there.
On the way up, you can also stop in the belfry for an interesting talk by the bell-ringing team In the church itself there is a fascinating display explaining the important part the mills played in the history of Bolton, with some wonderfully atmospheric photographs.
Churchwarden and Bolton councillor John Walsh OBE said: “I’m delighted to see so many people of all ages visiting today. They’ve said they’ve found it very interesting and were keen to find out more.”
The exhibition continues tomorrow, from 12pm to 3pm, – although the tower tour will not be running – and there is a special service of thanks at 3pm.
