THE yellow vest movement originated in France as a grassroots protest against price rises in fuel.

So called because protesters wear the yellow high-visibility jackets which are required by French law to be carried in all vehicles.

But the movement has evolved into general anger at higher living costs and President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies.

Now the French anti-austerity demonstrations led by the “gilets jaune” movement has inspired similar protests in the UK, including in Bolton.

Thousands of yellow vest protesters again rallied in French cities on Saturday for the10th consecutive weekend despite a national debate launched this week by aimed at reducing their anger.

Earlier this month the “Britain is Broken” demonstration, organised by The People’s Assembly Against Austerity, took place in London.

Crowds wearing yellow vests marched earlier marched to a rally in Trafalgar Square.

National organiser Ramona McCartney said at the time the protest was an attempt to “take back the political space taken up by Brexit”.

Ms McCartney said protesters also wanted to show “solidarity with the left and working class in France by wearing the yellow vests.

Some protesters travelled from France to join the march in London.
