SET in the front room and garden of Dr Jack Swenson, Mom’s gift tells the story of a family, who are re-uniting for the first time since the untimely death of Mom. Dad is celebrating his Sixtieth birthday and has gathered the family to inform them of his intention to propose to his new love. Combine this with a wayward older daughter, an entrepreneurial younger daughter, a dead wife who comes back with a mission, (or two), a reliable neighbour and a 70’s curtain-twitcher and you have the recipe for a great comedy. FLT present the British Premier of this play with style and displayed top notch acting ability all round.

Esme Mather was on form as Kat, the almost rebellious daughter who is haunted by the voice and apparition of her mother. A thought- provoking performance that kept you on the edge of your seat as you wondered if she would drop her guard. Her interactions with her Mom, played with a sincere ethereal edge by Joyce Smith provided some theatre highlights as both actresses were completely in character, resulting in eye watering moments throughout.

Kimberley Riley-Shipperbottom provided a bubbly performance as Brittney as she used her almost vulnerable side to get her family on side with her business ideas. Some great comic moments too from Kimberley. This displayed the versatilities of this seasoned performer.

In preparation for his birthday meal dad enlists the help of friend Trish to help make dinner. As the carer of his late wife, Trish is known to the family but little do the girls know that Dad plans to propose to Trish, having been together for seven months. Robin Thompson as dad delivers his usual high standard and Jacqui Brian delights as Trish, especially at as the story comes to a close in which she delivers the poignant dialogue skilfully.

As lifelong neighbour Kevin, Nick Eccles interacts well with all as he unwittingly provides resolutions to the many family issues presented. A good all round performance delivered effortlessly. There are not many actors who can steal a show without setting a foot on stage but Sandra Simpson managed this with aplomb. Delivering her many witty one liners form the upstairs window of a neighbouring property, she was just brilliant – great comic timing, delivery and expression that brought the house down. A cameo performance to be proud of.

Director Peter Scofield once again excels with the direction of this play, bringing Phil Olson’s fabulous Mom’s gift to FLT and to the UK.

As one audience member said as she left the theatre - “a great script and all the acting was brilliant” – you can’t say fairer than that!
