SNOW finally reached Bolton this morning after weeks of warnings from forecasters.

The Met Office had warned that temperatures were set to plunge this week, hitting lows of -3°C, with weather warnings in place.

Showers are forecast to continue to bring rain, sleet or snow at times as the day progresses, although significant flurries are expected to remain limited to higher ground.

The office also issued a yellow alert for ice, warning some roads and railways will be affected with longer journey times during the day today.

A forecaster said: "There will be an icy start on Tuesday, with overnight wet and windy weather having cleared east.

"It will be a day of frequent wintry showers, with snow accumulating on hills. Brighter, but cold thereafter."

Bolton Council carried out a full grit route last night and most roads in Bolton are clear, although Highways England warned motorists that it was snowing “quite heavy” on the M62 trans-Pennine route, where efforts were under way to keep the road open using ploughs and salt.
