A MAN is in hospital with machete wounds to his head and legs after he was assaulted by a gang of hooded attackers.

A white crime scene tent was in place on Spinning Meadow, off Gaskell Street, from the early hours of this morning and police have been investigating the incident, which left the man, aged 34, in a 'serious but stable condition'.

Close by, a cordon is in place across three properties in Chorley Old Road, close to the junction with Kirkhall Lane and Mortfield Lane.

An eyewitness, who lives on the street but wanted to remain anonymous, said the CCTV on her home had captured the entire incident.

She said she had seen the gang surround a man and begin hitting him with what looked like hockey sticks with something attached to the end, explaining that they had come running on to Spinning Meadow from a cut-through to Chorley Old Road.

Describing the horrific events, she said: "There was screaming and shouting that just kept on going and crunching on the floor because of ice.

"There were 6 or 7 men and they had hockey sticks and they were just beating this one guy up.

"One (of the men) was just not going. He kept on hitting him.

"There was a big pool of blood and he was beaten really badly."
