The next stop on Manchester's Metrolink is Bolton, according to Mayor Andy Burnham.

The Metrolink could be extended to areas including Bolton, Stockport and Wigan within three years after government promises to support an expansion of the tram network.

The pledge to increase the network with tram-trains was made on Friday by the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and Mr Burnham.

Tram-trains would run along existing railway lines, using both Metrolink and Network Rail tracks.

Along with plans for tram-train routes to connecting the city centre to Hale and Wilmslow, TfGM is proposing a route to on the Atherton line between Manchester and Wigan.

Mr Burnham said: "It is a bugbear for people who live in boroughs that don’t have the tram network.

“I would like it to go to Bolton, to Wigan, to Stockport and build out this system and I would like to agree a plan to take more control of the suburban rail system.”

TfGM is hoping that additions to the tram network would reduce congestion, improve air quality and deliver "more seamless, integrated and frequent journeys" for passengers.

Millions are being spent on the new Wharfside Metrolink stop, aided by the government through the Manchester Devolution Deal.
