PUBS aren’t what they once were.

We hear that a lot. We hear a lot of negativity around the whole industry of pubs, in fact. Only recently we reported on a massive fall in the number of ale houses in Bolton over the past few decades.

So isn’t it great to hear today about the thriving brewery scene that is springing up in Bolton in place of our traditional boozers?

Not content with the decline of pubs, entrepreneurial locals are giving the industry a much needed boost with their very own craft ciders, beers and even mead, with a raft of companies like Northern Monkey Brew Co, Blackedge Brewing Company and Bank Top Brewery all thriving in the town.

It’s this kind of entrepreneurial spirit, of looking forward, not back, that sets Bolton apart.

But for these firms to succeed in the long run they need our help.

It’s fine lamenting the loss of our local pubs, and other businesses, if we all buy our goods from supermarkets and online.

We’ve got a part to play. It ties in with our Shop Local campaign, which was launched last year to encourage people to support their local traders.

For every £1 spent with a local trader, 63p says in the local area, supporting local people and local jobs. (Research shows just 40p stays in the local area with larger businesses).

So, go on, do your bit, support these wonderful business owners who have taken a risk in an effort to offer Bolton something new and exciting.
