A MAJOR budget retailer has denied it plans to open a new store despite making an application to put up signage at an empty unit.

Bolton Council's planning department has received an application to place two new signs for bargain store B&M at a unit at Breightmet Retail Park, in Bury Road.

However, while the firm says it is always looking at new sites, it has denied that there are plans to open a store at that location.

A spokesperson for B&M said: “We’re always looking at sites for new stores and would welcome the opportunity to invest in the region.”

The proposals concern the empty unit adjacent to the former Poundworld store which shut in July 2018 after the company slipped into administration.

They include two signs, one which would be put up above the currently empty unit and another which would be added to the larger panel detailing all of the retailers at the park.

Other shops at the retail park include Aldi, Card Factory, Greenhalgh's, The Food Warehouse and children's charity Barnardo's.

A decision on the application is expected by late March.
