A HUGE fire has broken out in Old Trafford.

Fire crews were called to a commercial property on Darnley Street shortly before 5am this morning and found the units on fire.

However, the fire, which measured around 30 by 30 metres, at its height has now been brought under control.

Six out of the 10 fire engines deployed, and two aerial firefighting appliances, remain on the scene tackling the blaze.

Firefighters are also working to keep two gas cylinders found inside the property cool.

Group Manager Paul Duggan said: "Crews have done a fantastic job tackling this difficult fire and while it is now under control we will be on the scene for some time dealing with this incident."

Around 45 people from nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution and residents in the surrounding area should keep their windows and doors shut, the fire service has said.

A cordon has been put in place and there is currently a road closure from Kings Road at the Junction with Upper Chorlton Road to the junction of Upper Chorlton Road and Moss Lane West.

There is traffic disruption in the area and people are advised to avoid the area.

Mr Duggan said: "I know this has caused disruption to people living nearby and road users and I would like to apologise for this but assure people we are working hard to get roads opened and people back into their homes as soon as we can."
