THE M56 is closed this morning, Sunday, due to a serious accident.
A collision involving a lorry has closed the motorway westbound from junction 11 for Preston Brook and junction 12 for Runcorn.
The road has been closed since 5.30am.
Trapped traffic has been released and is being diverted via the A56 northbound.
North West Motorway Police put out a warning to motorists. On social media they said: "The #M56 is closed Westbound between J11 - J12, due to a collision.
"@NWmwaypolice are at scene. Traffic is diverted from J11, via the #A56 Northbound, the A558 & A533 (near #Runcorn) Westbound & the A557 South, to return to the M56 at J12.
"Follow the solid triangle symbol."
They later added: "M56 will remain closed until at least mid morning between junctions 10 and 12 .
"Please avoid the area."
