EARLY plans to build up to 690 homes on the edge of the borough have been revealed.

The leaseholder of Brackley Golf Course in Little Hulton wants to create a major housing development on the 27-hectare site.

MHE Investments has submitted an outline application to build hundreds homes together with a public open space, footpaths and cycle links.

A design and access statement prepared Baldwin Design Consultancy said: "The Vision is to create a sustainable residential urban extension that will bring a wide range of benefits for both existing and new residents of the town."

The initial plans propose building a mix of housing and apartments, offering two to four-bedroom properties.

These would predominantly be semi-detached and terrace-linked mews as well as some detached dwellings.

It also proposes building "attractive" streets and pedestrian routes which provide "excellent connectivity" across the site and into existing urban areas.

Promoting sustainability and reducing energy consumption is also listed as an initial design principle.

The site was originally a coal mine before being redeveloped in 1991 as a golf course which closed three years ago for financial viability reasons.

Its border fronts onto the M61 motorway with Manchester Road West sitting on its south western edge.

The majority of the site, 25.63 hectares, falls within the boundary of Salford City Council although the western part of the site falls under Bolton Council's purview.

The application, which has been submitted to both councils, seeks to demolish existing buildings such as the clubhouse and Bulloughs Farm outbuildings.

At this stage, the applicant is asking for permission to use Manchester Road West (A6) to access the proposed development which needs to be approved in principle.

Agent GVA HOW PLANNING submitted the application on behalf of MHE Investments in October.

The site was earmarked for 500 homes in a masterplan created by Salford City Council in 2016. The report said it offered a good opportunity for development without building on greenbelt.
