AN AMATEUR poker player has continued his remarkable run of form and luck after winning a money can't buy prize, even attempting to bluff a former world champion.

Adam Conroy, a trade analyst from Bury, landed himself and two friends a seat at a table facing off against some of poker's biggest superstars, when he won a major online tournament last week.

The audacious 29-year-old card sharp tried his hand against Martin Jacobson, the winner of the 2014 World Series of Poker and its $10 million jackpot, only just coming unstuck.

Mr Conroy admitted he was sweating on the move, but said he was confident he almost pulled it off, adding: "It would have been amazing if he had folded - but I suppose that's why he is a world champion player."

Entry to the game was just one of the prizes won by Mr Conroy, which he chose to share with his friends Tom Mason, also from Bury, and Josh Veasey, from Didsbury, Manchester.

Also scooped by the poker dab hand were tickets to a premier league football match, and entry for the three friends to a second big-prize poker event — the four-day £440 entry 888poker Live London Main Event.

Kicking off last Thursday the tournament amassed a staggering £295,020 prize fund, and Mr Conroy battled his way to 40th place, picking up £1,410 in prize money.

However it was the "Bros v Pros Cash Game" which really flared the lads' excitement.

The pressure was on in the two-hour cash game in which each of the friends was given £1,000 in chips to take on Mr Jacobson — joined by Chris Moorman, from Essex, the world's most successful online poker player, who has won more than $20 million; and leading high stakes international cash poker players Sofia Lovgren and Tiffany Michelle.

Despite the heat, Mr Conroy got off to a strong start, even knocking Ms Michelle out of the game.

And, although he could not maintain his early success, he ultimately came away with £1,075.

His friends also played well, with Mr Veasey winning an impressive £3,400 and Mr Mason netting £300.

After the game Mr Jacobson praised the men's play saying: "They came to play and got involved from the start. They certainly didn't show to make up the numbers.

"They wanted to play every hand. It was a brilliant fun contest and the guys certainly didn't let themselves down. They played a great game."

Mr Conroy said: "It was fantastic. The 888poker Ambassadors were amazing. They were so friendly. They made us feel so welcome and there was great banter across the table.

"It was like a Friday night home game for us. I was doing so well and then I decided to make a play and bluff Martin. That's when the wheels came off for me. But I still ended up winning £1,075. So, I was pleased with that."
