A NEW BBC political drama starring Dame Emma Thompson is being filmed in Bolton Town Centre today.

The futuristic series, titled Years and Years, has been written by Doctor Who writer, Russell T. Davies.

It follows a Manchester family from post-Brexit to 2034 and explores how they cope under a right-wing government.

As well as Dame Emma, the cast includes Anne Reid, best-known for Last Tango in Halifax.

Odessa Cafe on Exchange Scene was closed for the afternoon so that scenes could be shot there.

Owner Alex Mcvey said: "They phoned me a couple of weeks ago. I think they were after a traditional cafe. They've put up their own pictures and cleared some things away.

"I think it will be good publicity and if they want me to be an extra then I'd be happy to oblige. I'm up for a laugh."

Curious passers-by, including Fiona Hazeldean, were surprised to see huge cameras and lights set up outside.

Filming also took place on Le Mans Crescent, at the entrance to the Town hall.

The series has been made by Red Productions and is due to be screened later this year.

Years and Years will be coming to BBC One in Spring
