GUSTS of 55mph could impact on travel and potentially cause power cuts in some areas as Storm Gareth hits Bolton.

The Met Office says the storm, which has swept Southwards, will bring with wind and rain which is set to continue until Wednesday afternoon.

Forecasters say the winds are likely to ease at around noon today but will pick up again in the evening, with gusts ranging between 40-55mph.

The heavy rain which the storm has brought to the region is set to continue until 1pm before finally relenting, although this too is likely to return around midnight.

Transport delays are the most likely impact of the weather, with rail and bus services expected to be impacted in some areas as well as high-sided vehicles in exposed areas.

Met Office chief meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: “The strong north-westerly winds will also affect southwest Scotland late on Tuesday, spreading across much of England and Wales through Wednesday.

"Gusts of 50-55 mph are likely inland and up to 65 mph along western coasts. Winds will gradually ease during the afternoon.”
