A MAN has been arrested in connection with a "shocking" attempted rape in Trafford.

A woman in her 50s had been walking across a car park near Firs Road in Ashton-on-Mersey when she was attacked by a man.

The man sexually assaulted the woman and attempted to rape her before fleeing on a silver pedal bike towards Harboro Road.

Police were called and quickly arrested a 32-year-old man who remains in custody for questioning on suspicion of attempted rape.

Detective Sergeant Phil Bainbridge of GMP’s Trafford Division said: “This was a shocking attack that has left the woman involved understandably shaken.

“Thankfully, she received no serious injuries and is recovering well in the care of specialist officers.

“We understand the concern that incidents like this cause and there will be a visible police presence in the area while officers continue their investigations.

“I would encourage members of the public to approach these officers with any questions they may have.

“Police were quickly on the scene and have arrested one man, but we continue to appeal for information from members of the public on this crime.

“Were you in the area at the time of the offence or saw anyone acting suspiciously? Perhaps you saw a silver push bike being ridden in the vicinity at the time?

“If you have any information, get in touch immediately.”
