A TEAM of intrepid cyclists on a daunting bike ride across England made their first stop in Bolton today.

The riders are journeying from Blackpool to London in a mammoth cycling challenge organised by the Federation of Small Businesses.

Led by FSB board member Ian O'Donnell, the bikers made a quick pit stop at Bolton Town Hall this morning, where they were greeted by the Mayor of Bolton, councillor Elaine Sherrington.

Mr O'Donnell, who is an avid fitness fanatic and will be competing in a half marathon in London this Sunday, said: "We have had a beautiful first leg and the weather has so far got better and better.

"Today has been all right but tomorrow could be a bit more of challenging and the route could be a real test for the legs."

In Bolton, the team also picked up FSB North West regional chairman Chris Manka, who will join them for the rest of the ride.

Mr Manka said he was eager to get on the road and is looking forward to the challenge.

With no time to waste and refreshed after their rest the team quickly whizzed on their way as they head for the FSB’s Westminster office.

The three-day bike ride is fundraising for the children's charity, the Rainbow Trust — FSB's charity of the year — which provides amazing experience days for ill and disabled youngsters.

Bolton business man and FSB area lead for Greater Manchester, Phil Thompson, said: "I attended today to cheer the team on. This is a very worthwhile cause and every penny raised goes towards helping very poorly children."

Greater Manchester cycling czar and Olympian Sir Chris Boardman is also backing the rider.

He said: “Travelling by bike is fantastic way to keep fit and I wish everyone at the FSB taking part well.

"I’m pleased to hear the route was chosen to take in Greater Manchester where we have plans to deliver the UK’s largest cycling and walking network.”
