A BOLTON MP is supporting proposals to introduce a German model of tenancy.
Sir David Crausby is backing a Labour pledge to protect private renters from eviction with "indefinite" tenancies based on rules in place in Germany.
Under the German system, tenancies are effectively open-ended with a tenant only able to be evicted on tightly defined grounds, for example if they don’t pay the rent or commit criminal behaviour in the property.
Tenancies in England last on average four years, in Germany they last 11 years.
Sir David said: "Renters shouldn’t have to fear being made to move through no fault of their own. If you do not have stability in your living arrangements it makes it very hard to plan for your future and it can be extremely disruptive to family life.”
In England tenants can be evicted without reason. Sir David says Labour's proposals would benefit the 14,000 renting households in Bolton.
John Healey, Labour's shadow housing secretary, said: "Private renters shouldn’t be living in fear of losing their homes."
