YOUNGSTERS have been riding a wave of adventure thanks to a Bolton charity.

Due to a £74,100 grant from Children in Need, 750 disadvantaged local children and teenagers have enjoyed an adrenalin-packed 12 months.

The thrill-seekers have been helped by the charity WAVE Adventure which aims to improve mental wellbeing and improve the ability to form and develop positive relationships.

Project manager Graham Wood said “The funding from BBC Children in Need has enabled WAVE Adventure to reach out to many disadvantaged and isolated children and young people in Bolton.

“ It has been amazing to watch individual young people gain confidence, improve physical and mental health and take on mentoring and leadership roles.”

He added: “We definitely would not have been able to make such a difference in children and young people’s lives without BBC Children in Needs’ support.”

The youngsters have had the opportunity to try their hand at such thrilling activities as rock climbing, kayaking and mountain biking.

Others have become mentors and now support other disadvantaged young people to take part in adventurous activities.

Along with regular local sessions, young people have also had the chance to venture further afield to Malham Cove and take part in challenges such as a Coast2coast bike challenge.

Mr Wood said: “It is obvious that disadvantaged children and young people from Bolton are gaining great benefits from the project.”

One youngster said of his adventures: “I thought it was very good fun. It was a good challenge and a great laugh.

“Instead of me sat at home watching Netflix I was out getting exercise and overcoming fears.”

A delighted parent added: “Attending WAVE sessions has helped my daughter develop her confidence and self-belief.”

WAVE Adventure have been providing confidence building healthy activities to disadvantaged children, young people, families and vulnerable adults in Bolton since 1999.
