CHILDREN have helped to develop a new woodland area at their school.

Pupils at The Derby High School have planted 350 sapling trees in a new nature area at the site.

The trees, which included Silver Birch, Hazel, Oak, Hawthorn and Blackthorn, were gifted to the school by the Woodland Trust.

They have been planted behind the sports hall to create "a legacy for generations to come."

A special community celebration was held to mark the occasion, which was attended by The Friends of The Derby, pupils, parents and carers, staff and a representative from Metrolink.

Nature Club organiser Karen Thornton said: "I was absolutely delighted with the number of volunteers who attended the event.

"My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who donated their time and energy.

"I think 350 trees in one hour must be a record! The children all worked very hard before the event to set everything up. They will all remember this event for a long time to come as they thoroughly enjoyed it.

"The new nature area will soon be teeming with wildlife. What a way to celebrate nature."
