EASTER took on an environmentally-friendly theme this year for over 100 school pupils.

Blackrod Primary School students took part in their annual Easter bonnet parade, but this year they had a special mission. Children were tasked with using only recycled materials to create their bonnets, instead of buying new craft supplies.

Cardboard tubes, boxes and plastic packaging were all put to use and made for some of the best hats the parade tradition has seen in all its years. Teacher Mrs Thagia said all 135 infant students took part in the push to be greener.

She said: “The theme is quite unique. In school we’ve got a really big emphasis on being better citizens of the world and we’re constantly looking at ways of recycling. The children are taking that back home and nagging parents to do the same!”

The children were all given four weeks to prepare, collecting items and drawing up their designs.

Mrs Thagia said: “They enjoyed it because it was different and they were really applying their learning.”

Not only did the children have fun creating their bonnets, the theme received from parents too.

Mrs Thagia added: “Normally they feel obliged to buy new stuff and make it different, but this time they could reuse things from last year.”

The bonnets were paraded and the junior students Easter egg designs were also put on display.
