OUR recent photograph of staff and pupils from St. Ethelbert’s RC Primary School going on an outing to London in 1982 brought back many great memories of that day for Kevin Morris of Astley Bridge.
Kevin, who can be seen giving the thumbs up with what he describes as a “shocking” 1980s style hair cut, said: “I recall all the staff and pupils left school on Melbourne Road via coaches to Trinity Street station and then a train journey down to the capital. On the picture, on the steps, are the deputy headteacher, Mr Tony Ball, and the then headmistress Sister Therese with her arm raised and encouraging people to wave.
He added: “Top of the picture is teacher Mr Leonard Duxbury, and I can also make out other teachers including Mrs Peggy Parker, Mrs Joan Holt, Mrs Margaret Deakin, and, in the middle, a wonderful dinner lady, Mrs Mary Walkden. At the front is Sister Savio and another teacher .”
The picture also includes pupil Maura Jackson, now head of BackUp North West, and Paul Kirkbright, who had a role in the BBC TV children’s show Jossy’s Giants,
Mr Morris said: “We all had a great day out — for so many, including myself, it was our first ever outing to London.”
