A BOLTON MP is co-sponsoring a Paliamentary motion calling for improved trade union rights.

The motion seeks to gain trade unions access to workplaces.

In the UK there is currently no legal right of access to workplaces for unions to recruit new members, and some employers seek to bar trade union activists from the premises.

Sir David Crausby, MP for Bolton North East, said: “The right to join a trade union is an important part of democracy, but that cannot work in practice if unions can’t reach out to workers.

"Trade unions play an important role in defending the pay, terms and conditions of their members and we should help to give workers more options to improve their situation.”

The motion raises the example of New Zealand, where legislation prevents employers from unreasonably withholding access to the premises as long as sufficient notice is given by the trade union.

The motion is backed by 41 MPs so far.
